Learning, researching, and developing useful references are high in my list of activities that I am passionate about. I’ve been writing articles about Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ), Social Media, Social Media Optimization ( SMO), among other business related topics that can be found in the Stable Solution Chronicles. I have not written a lot about Search Engine Marketing ( SEM) , but it is also a service that I offer as part of my business. To start with, it is important to understand some basic terminology.

Search Engine Marketing is using paid listings to market and promote a website.

When it comes to search engines there are two types of listings:

Paid listings are exactly that. Sites are listed based on keywords and on the price paid to display the listing. There are also various factors that search engines use to rank and display their paid listing results.

Natural or Organic listing are free listings, which are determined by each search engines’ algorithms. Google for instance uses over 200 measures to determine page ranking. Sites built for page ranking based on organic methods use Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) to make the site friendlier for search engines to determine the relevance of the material related to specifice key words.

Benefits of using paid advertising is that as a site owner, you have more control over how, when and where your site is found than using organic methods. Both methods have validity for different reasons.

Paid listings on search engines either charge on a Pay-Per-Click basis ( PPC ) or a Cost-Per-Thousand-Impressions ( CPM). With PPC, ads are only paid for when they are clicked on versus CPM which tracks every time your ad is displayed for billing purposes.

When you decide to use paid advertising you are either trying to get an action from viewers in the form of a direct response, which may be clicking through to your website, making an online purchase, requesting information, or signing up for a newsletter. The goal is to have the user complete the desired action. This is called conversion. Sometimes, the goal is to build recognition for your product or company. This is called branding.

Before spending money on SEO or SEM, I feel very strongly about defining the goals, so that money spent on marketing is money well spent. Don’t rush and jump in without taking time to develop goals. I often see businesses do this, which can be very expensive and does not necessarily deliver the desired results.

When optimizing your site for the best search engine performance, make sure that you are using sanctioned SEO techniques. Avoid using hidden links.

When you are working on your site’s SEO, one of the factors that search engine algorithms are evaluating is the significance of your site. Links on the site play into the “significance” calculation. Unethical webmasters may choose to try and fake the significance by adding “hidden” links. These are taboo and can cause your site to be removed from search results.

What exactly is a hidden link? Hidden links are meant to be read by search engines, but not by the human eye. Examples include:

Text that is the same color as the background
Text hidden behind an image
Text that is too small to read

My advice? Keep your SEO practices above the table. Remember, your online reputation is important. Using questionable techniques won’t help you in the long run. If you need an evaluation of your site, please keep Screen Caffeen in mind. We will be happy to help.

I have been really busy designing websites, fixing problems that customers have with code that other web designers have created, improving clients traffic rankings, writing e-newsletters & SEO proposals, setting up WordPress blogs… The list goes on. As a result, I haven’t quite gotten this site spruced up to the point that I want it. But stay tuned because I have great ideas for this site that are not far off. I will be navigating away from the Javascript code for slide shows, adding new blog categories, adding content that will help you understand web design and social media services better. All coming soon!

As a web services provider, page ranking catches my attention. Many web service companies say that they perform search engine optimization (SEO). In reality I have seen some companies make this claim, while their page ranks in the 11,000,000s. Lower numbers are better. Google is ranked #1, Yahoo #2 per Alexa’s system.

I have been successful at consistently improving page ranking of sites that I’ve worked on. There are simple things that can be done to improve page ranking fairly quickly, its a matter of knowing the tools and understanding factors that are relevant to improve ranking. To give an example, when I put effort into improving the SEO for Stable Solutions, within 2 months, my ranking had improved from being in the mid 2 millions to into the mid 500,000s.

I do have to say it is a strategy that is executed on a regular basis. SEO strategy needs to be more than implementing keywords, there are multiple prongs taht improve your ranking. Under my SEO category, I’ll be discussing aspects of SEO strategies.
